Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise when she was an infant. Aunt Denise was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could devote her days to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay was captivated by the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt introduced her to DuVernay. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who was a social sassy and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was a child together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father was awed by the historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town Selma Alabama. Her summers in Selma, Alabama would be the inspiration for her later a film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for journalistic broadcasting while in school. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the home and looking through the trash belonging to one of the jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalistic duties and decided to switch over to the world of public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist right after college.
